Subaru Legacy Concept

THIS is the only view that Subaru will allow us of its new Legacy Concept, at least until the car appears at the Detroit motor show on January 11.
It's a tantalising teaser because the car the Americans call the Legacy is known to Australians as a Liberty. Subaru will release the next Liberty (and Outback) models from next September. So what we're looking at is probably a good representation of that Liberty. The pumped wheel arches frame a distinctive face that is an evolution of current Liberty styling, rather than pursuing some of the more unconventional recent Subaru directions. Vertically stacked headlights, LED-style foglights and an aggressively styled lower fascia all pick up contemporary cues.A 3.6-litre, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine mated to Subaru's trademark all-wheel-drive system will be the headliner, although you can bet on more fuel-efficient four-cylinder boxer petrol and perhaps boxer diesel engines as well. -- STEVE COLQUHOUN
