ILLAWARRA will become hoon heaven under a proposal to relocate a car festival from Wagga Wagga that attracts a crowd of 10,000 participants and spectators.
Street Machine Promotions has lodged a development application with Wollongong City Council to run the annual Revfest event at Bulli Showground for the next five years.Revfest has been held at Wagga for the past three years, exciting car nuts with doughnut and burnout challenges, racing, engine "blow-ups" and displays. But many Wagga residents are glad to see the back of the festival because of the noise and disruption."I'm glad you're having it and not us. I hope it never comes back here," one woman told the Mercury. Police issued hundreds of tickets and cautions during Revfest at Wagga, but organisers say they're not in the business of creating trouble."The whole yobbo, flannelette wearing, cigarette smoking, burnouts from the traffic lights image is not us," Revfest boss Mark Arblaster said. He said his group saw Wollongong as a better venue and it was a mecca for car fans.? BRETT COX reports: Page 4? EDITORIAL: Page 28.
