Very Nice Shock

AT LAST, a tiny electric car that looks half-decent.

Meet the Nice MyCar, which was unveiled at the British motor show last week.

It looks nothing like the runabouts that have gone before which were either based on British milk delivery carts or designed by people who had only ever worked on margarine tubs.

And there's a good reason for this. The MyCar was drawn by Giugiaro, founder of the famous ItalDesign styling house.

The MyCar has two seats, a range of 100 km, can do 64 km/h and takes six to eight hours to charge its cheap lead-acid batteries, all of which makes it ideal for pottering around town during your daily meanderings.

Standard equipment includes electric windows and mirrors, central locking, radio with MP3 jack and a central multifunction display.

Options include leather upholstery, glass roof or removable fibreglass top, alloy wheels and seats which can be heated or cooled. See? Just like a real car.

We should add that Nice is the name of the company distributing the Hong Kong-built MyCar in Britain, not some sort of one-word car review.

Nice was started by two former Lotus engineers, Julian Wilford and Evert Guertsen, and is an acronym for "no internal combustion engine".

Which means there are no emissions from the car - depending on how your electricity is generated. -- IAN PORTER
